So I finally got a chance to watch the new Moxie movie on Netflix, based on Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu. I can comfortably say that I enjoyed it, but right after watching it I realized I had never read the book so I quickly fixed that issue! There were a lot of things that I liked and disliked about each of them.
The Book:
Pros:
I loved loved loved that they had actual pictures of the zines in the books! Made it so much more interesting!
The relationship dynamic between mother/daughter/grandparents, truly showed generational views and issues.
Her childhood best friend
The book went deeper with the issues of dress coding and I deeply appreciated the realness of the issue.
Cons:
I wasn't as crazy about her boyfriend in the book as I was in the movie.
I'm honestly struggling to think of another con for this bullet point....
The Movie:
Pros:
Amy Poehler in general. Just amazing.
They stuck to the book with the music and the zines themselves
Inclusiveness
The relationships felt more developed, even the main character's development felt more intense in the movie than in the book.
Cons:
I didn't like how they changed the best friends character
Not really a con, but I had mixed feelings about changing the principle from the original male character to a female character.
Overall I enjoyed each of them for their own positive points. I have honestly never really thought about zines until we started a Teen Zine Program at the library. If you're like me and this has inspired you to looked more into the power of zines, check out Broken Pencil for a free issue.
