In astrology, Scorpios are the sign of .... you guessed it! A scorpion. They are a part of the water signs, meaning that they're characterized by intense emotion and strong intuition! Scorpios are born from the dates between October 23 and November 21. A typical scorpio or person with strong scorpio placements in their astrology chart will typically be passionate, determined, ambitious, and blunt! A few reasons for this is because Scorpio is ruled by the planet Pluto. Pluto is a far off, cold, planet, but don't be fooled by exterior. Scorpios also present a cool and unaffected, even ambiguous, front to the world, but they are extremely emotional and intense. Specifically, because Pluto represents creation and destruction, we can see this split side of Scorpios and how their attitude can change based on who they're with.
Scorpio season coincidentally fits right in with spooky season: all of the obsessive, intense, scary goodness, so here are some books that I think are representative of both!
Disclaimer: Astrology is not one sign fits all aspects of your personality! You should do some in-depth research of your chart, specifically personal planets, to find a better essence of how astrology connects to your personality :)
The Kinder Poison - Natalie Mae
The Kinder Poison is a novel that features a lot of twists and turns, some sweet, and some poisonous. Beware of these character's stings! The protagonist Zahru starts off as an ordinary peasant girl, but when she's the one chosen as Human Sacrifice for the Crossing (a race for the three heirs of the kingdom of Orkena to see who will become king) she is also invoked and has to go through trials along with them. This novel is high fantasy and similar to The Inheritance Games! I picked it for Scorpio season because it is an enthralling book with high stakes- traits that definitely fit Scorpios. Furthermore, the novel and its characters has so many layers, also like a Scorpio, that you're sure to enjoy it. Many of them are morally gray, a very Scorpio trait, because they're so mysterious. (Also, it doesn't hurt that the cover has the Scorpio patron animal on it!)
White is for Witching - Helen Oyeyemi
WIFW by Helen Oyeyemi is a gothic tale about families and ghosts. We are taken into the home of the Silver family, who are reeling and shaken from the wife and mother, Lily's, disappearance. The Silvers consist of Miranda and Eliot, twins, and their father, Luc. We follow each of them in the novel, but there's a spooky twist that plays into the entirety of the novel; Miranda is attuned to spirits and ghosts. This novel is perfect for Scorpio season because of the sheer mystery and fog surrounding the novel; we are confronted with more questions than answers, and the ending and theme of the book makes you question yourself and look deep inside the constraints of your own mind. If one of your favorite books is Jane Eyre, or you've really enjoyed shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor or The Haunting of Hill House, what are you doing? Go pick up this book now! The atmosphere and creepy setting plays a huge part in the book- in fact, Oyeyemi even writes in the house's perspective. And finally, Oyeyemi has beautiful lyrical writing that will haunt you for a long time after that last page.
The City Beautiful - Aden Polydoros
The City Beautiful is a historical fiction set in Chicago of 1893. We follow two boys, Alter Rosen and his best friend, Yakov. However, after a murderer has prowled Chicago in search of Jewish victims, Alter's best friend is killed. This novel is so incredible because it is so immersive; the setting is unique, set during the Chicago World Fair. Furthermore, the protagonists struggles are so moving and compelling, especially as immigrants in a new and unfamiliar country. The author's haunting atmosphere, combined with the complete mystery and thrill of tracking down Yakov's murderer is a Scorpio's dream! We have LGBTQ representation as well, making this novel even more worth the read. The City Beautiful just came out on October 5'th of 2021 but its arrived to us at the perfect time.
White Cat - Holly Black
Holly Black is a famous Young-Adult author renowned for her Folk of The Air series, and this is another one of her unknown but just as amazing works! White Cat is an urban fantasy novel centering around Cassel- our main character. And murderer. He is part of a famous magic family, one that specializes in curses. However, in his world, magic has been outlawed- and this leads to problems. Cassel soon begins having dreams about a white cat and a secret that is deeply entrenched in his family's legacy. As a heir to his family's work and magic, our main character is drawn deeper and deeper into this dangerous mystery. I picked this novel for Scorpio season because of a few scorpio traits: namely, their charisma and their ability to manipulate situations (like magic). This book is the epitome of that, and will surely be loved by people with a craving for a gritty contemporary fantasy and conflicted, enigmatic main character.
White Smoke - Tiffany D Jackson
Okay, I didn't intentionally mean for three of the books on this list to start with the word white, but sometimes coincidences happen! Anyways, White Smoke is a classic haunted hose horror story; after Marigold moves cross-country to seemingly dull town Cedarville, she is glad to escape her old life. However, problems soon arise in the form of her sister, Piper, her sleepy town, and the strange mannerisms of the house- which she suspects doesn't exactly want to leave her alone. This is another mystery novel that features paranormal elements and is absolutely delicious! Another perfect thriller for Halloween and our fog-shrouded Scorpio season!
