Books To Kick-Off Your Reading Journey

If you a reluctant reader and aren’t sure what books to read, hopefully this blog will help you!

My first suggestion is to narrow your choices down a bit based on what genre you like. The genres I will be covering in this blog are: Dystopian, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Romance, and Thriller.

Dystopian

Dystopian books have political and social structures, are set in nightmare worlds with control systems, and contain characters who have little to no individual freedom or expression. They also will often contain warfare and violence as a backdrop, as well as a false Utopia, which is the perfect world [the opposite of Dystopia].

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games takes place in the ruins of what used to be North America, known as Panem, a glorious Capital with 12 surrounding Districts. The Capital is harsh and cruel. It keeps the Districts in line by forcing them to compete in the annual Hunger Games, where each District has to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 to 18. There is a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take someone else’s place in the games. Without meaning to, she becomes a contender. If she is to win, she will need to make hard decisions between love, life, and humanity.

Fantasy

Fantasy uses magic and supernatural elements as a primary focus and/or setting.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

This novel depicts a legendary game and follows two sisters with an unbreakable bond. Scarlett and Tella Dragna have never left their home on a small island because of their cruel father. Scarlett has an arranged marriage. She can’t get out of it and thinks her dreams of visiting the annual competition at Caraval, where the audience participates in the show, are never going to come true. This year, Scarlett’s invitation arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor and Tella, Scarlett gets to go. As soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by the mastermind, Legend. This year's Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her is the year’s winner. Scarlett has been told this is all a game, but she doubts it. She must find Tella before the 5 nights are over, or Tella will disappear forever. Welcome to Caraval! Be careful of being to swept up in the game…

Historical Fiction

Historical Fiction represents a story set in the past and tries to make sure the history is accurately represented through a fictional story.

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

Rebecca is set in Monte Carlo, where Rebecca falls for the handsome widower, Maxim De Winter, and he suddenly proposes marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady’s maid, she can’t believe it. It is only as they arrive at his large estate that she finds out how big an impact his late wife still has in everyone’s life, including theirs. She feels that his late wife is trying to ruin their marriage from the grave.

Mystery

Mystery books often follow a crime that has happened or is happening, like a murder or disappearance. Mystery books are also known as "whodunnit’s," because you get to play detective too.

Everyone in Fairview knows the story. Pretty and popular high school senior Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend Sal Singh, who then killed himself. Five years later, Pip can’t shake the feeling that there is more to the story. She knew Sal since she was a little kid, and he was always so kind. How could he be a killer? Now a Senior, Pip decides to open up the case again for her final project, at first to cast doubt. Soon she discovers dark secrets that prove Sal’s innocence. Someone doesn’t want Pip digging around, and now her life might be in danger.

Romance

Romance books have to have two things:

  1. A love interest

  2. A satisfying ending

Better Than The Movies by Lynn Painter

A hopeless teen romantic attempts to secure a happily-ever-after with her forever crush, but her next door neighbor keeps getting in the way. Liz Buxbaum has already given her heart away to Michael, but he never saw her for who she was before he moved away. Now he’s back, and Liz will do whatever it takes to have him as her prom date...even if it’s to pretend that Wes Bennet, Michael’s friend and her neighbor, is her boyfriend. She is shocked to find out that she enjoys her time with her annoying next door neighbor.

Thriller

Thrillers are often fast paced with fast thinking heroines, just-as-fast-thinking villains, and suspense and cliffhangers that have you flipping pages faster than you can read!

The HouseMaid by Freida McFadden

The house maid wants a fresh start and has a hard time securing a job, but, luckily, Nina Winchester hires her. The house is gorgeous and large. Every day she cleans the house top to bottom, picks up their daughter from school, and cooks a delicious meal for the entire family. Before going to her small room upstairs, she tries to ignore how messy and rude Nina is. Her husband, Andrew, seems to be more broken each day. His eyes are filled with pain; it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to be Nina. Millie soon finds out that the door only locks from the outside. It seems the Winchesters are far more dangerous than she first thought.
