First things first: make sure you are working on a level surface. Until it dries, resin is still very much a liquid and can make a mess. Also make sure you always work in a well ventilated area.
1. Lay down your silicon mold on a flat surface. This one is mine. You can see I have marked on the back of mine. I have noted that it hold exactly 8 ounces of resin. (For 1:1 ratio resin that is 4oz:4oz)
2. Mix up your epoxy resin. (There are many different types of resin out there, and they can be used for all sorts of projects, so make sure if you decide to get into this type of craft, you do your research. Starting with the easy to use 1:1 ratio Epoxy Resin that is made for crafting jewelry is the best place to begin.)
According to my resin instructions, I am to pour Part A into the measuring cup first, then Part B. Then MIX. Mix forever! We are talking 3-5 minutes!! It seems like forever, and your arm wants to fall off, but it is important to stir well to get all the extra air bubbles out of the mixture.
3. Once your mixture is ready, you can choose to use it as is, and create a beautiful crystal clear tray, or you can be extra like myself.
I have chosen gold flake and blue mica powder to add a little something extra to mine.
4. Begin SLOWLY pouring your mixture(s) into your tray. Pour as evenly as possible and make sure there are no areas that are left bare. Once you are all filled up, it is time to add the flowers.
(A quick note about adding flowers: if it is important to you that the flowers are in a specific place, paint a little of your resin mixture onto the flowers before placing them in the bare silicone tray. This would be the first thing you do. You will also want to wait 15-20 minutes for the flowers to really adhere before pouring your resin. Otherwise keep in mind that while the resin is hardening, things can movie around.)
5. Make sure you are wearing your gloves, and grab your tweezers. Use the tweezers to pick up and place the dried flowers gently into your resin mixture inside the mold. once you are satisfied, you can use the trace amounts of mixture leftover in your measuring cup to carefully pour a little over each of the flowers, ensuring encasement on all sides.
6. Exercise some patience, and get your wait on. (Depending on what type of resin you use, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 48 to cure and harden. So make sure you read your instructions carefully!)
Now go pick some flowers and have fun!
