Chance Selection

America Singer had her life all planned out. Her station required her to be a musician, but she was a good one. She was secretly in love with Aspen, a man beneath her station, but they made plans to get married and slowly scrimped and saved every penny they could so they wouldn’t starve. But it all changed when America’s name was drawn to participate in the Selection; the time when the prince of Illéa chooses his bride, and the future queen of Illéa. It is a dangerous game to defy the government, so America now has no choice but to pack her things, say goodbye to her family and Aspen, and head to the palace. America has no interest in competing for Prince Maxon’s love nor does she have any desire to be a part of the corrupt government. Unfortunately, she is reluctantly pulled into the drama of the palace as it appears Maxon may have an interest in her. And to her surprise, America is having second thoughts about the whole Selection as she learns more about the seemingly pompous prince…

The Selection series is a book series that sweeps the reader off to an imagined future of the United States. Kiera Cass’s vivid and life-like descriptions of settings, people, and down to the very clothing and food erases the reality surrounding the reader. Onlookers will get caught up in the drama that unfolds rather quickly as America meets women of all types of backgrounds in the palace; some with very malicious intent. This series is not incredibly graphic or crass, but it is suggestive of hidden evils in some sequences as Cass explores the realities of a corrupt and twisted government as well as jealous and malicious women bent on doing whatever it takes to win their prize. Cass never leaves for a dull moment in her series with each chapter ending with an urge to turn the next page. Altogether, Cass’s Selection series is worth the reading time, and readers will finish with an urge to take on the world like America Singer.
