Coldplay is a British band formed in London, England in 1996. Chris Martin is the pianist and lead vocalist, Johnny Buckland plays guitar, Guy Berryman plays bass, and Will Champion is the drummer and percussionist. They released their debut album, Parachutes featuring the hit single "Yellow" which rocketed their popularity. Coldplay currently owns seven GRAMMY Awards, three Juno Awards, and twelve American Music Awards, among countless other awards.
On Oct. 4, Coldplay released Moon Music, their 10th studio album. Here are my thoughts and opinions on all ten songs.
01 - MOON MUSiC
The title track starts with someone saying "moon music." The editing makes me think an astronaut is saying it. Then a beautiful string melody makes me feel like I'm soaring through the final frontier. Eventually, the calming strings fade out, allowing a simple piano tune to start. The piano feels melancholic to me. Then lead vocalist, Chris Martin comes in with some very fitting lyrics (left) that correspond to the melody of the piano. Certain lyrics like "Maybe I'm just crazy / I should just be a brick in a wall" perfectly express the song's mood. Overall, I feel that this song has amazing lyrics and the strings and piano are very relaxing.
02 - feelslikeimfallinginlove
On Jun. 21, "feelslikeimfallinginlove" was released as a single. I listened to it on repeat for a week after it came out. Later, it was included in the Oct. 4 release of the Moon Music album. This song perfectly captures the fears and joys of falling in love, hence the name. The stanza "I know that in this kind of scene / Of two people, there’s a spark between / One gets torn apart / One gets a broken heart" is a great example of this. The vocals in this song are so good, and I love the background music and the pop feel of this song. It's easily on my top three list for this album.
03 - WE PRAY
I first heard this song in the live performance on Saturday Night Live. I was so surprised when I saw it because there were so many artists on the stage. There is a lot of diversity in each of the artist's styles that contributes to the overall style of the song. Chris Martin provided the main vocals. TINI and Elyanna added great vocals that contrast with Martin's. Little Simz and Burna Boy mixed the rap genre into the song. I liked how all the artists collaborated, which made this song another top three for me.
04 - JUPiTER
"JUPiTER" is the only song in Moon Music that is in Coldplay's "old" style. In Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto release, the band shifted more to the electronic and pop genres. After this, most of their songs were like this. The acoustic guitar reminds me of "Yellow," - which is in my opinion Coldplay's best song. The song has a story to it, which was interesting to me.
05 - GOOD FEELiNGS
"GOOD FEELiNGS" is the last member of my top three list, mainly because it is so upbeat. The drum beat and background music blends seamlessly with the vocals by Ayra Starr and Chris Martin. The children singing the "la-la-la-la" melody adds a joyful mood. Also, at the beginning and end of the song, you can hear children talking which I think is a cool detail.
06 - 🌈
"🌈" is very similar to "MOON MUSiC" in its structure. The melody in the first minute or so makes me imagine stars twinkling in the sky. Then intense drums come in with some vocals by Martin. After this, a piano tune starts and a new verse starts, just like "MOON MUSiC"
07 - iAAM
"iAAM" gets an honorable mention for my top three list. The lyrics are very impactful and relatable for me, and the guitar, drums, and keys are perfect. The overall composition is great, and I love how upbeat this song is.
08 - AETERNA
"AETERNA" is, in my opinion, the weirdest song. The electronic melody in the beginning makes me feel like I'm in a video game, and the lyrics are sung so high that sometimes I can't tell what they are. For example, until I looked up the lyrics, I thought "This must be bliss / this extraordinariness" was "This must be the eclipse / this extraordinariness." The chanting at the end is very random, but Coldplay has been known to add weird things to their songs.
09 - ALL MY LOVE
The piano in "ALL MY LOVE" makes this song great. Martin's vocals add so much when combined with the strings, guitar, drums, and piano. I know I have too many favorites, but I had to give this song an honorable mention.
10 - ONE WORLD
"ONE WORLD" is my least favorite. The instrumentals are great, but the whole song is just a repeat of several lyrics. "ONE WORLD" is essentially just a way to end the album in seven minutes of unneeded repetition.
In the end, Moon Music is just what I expected - an amazing album from one of my favorite artists. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I do!
