Principessa Serafina of the Mediterranean Sea realm, Miromara, thought her life couldn’t get any more complicated. It’s the day of her betrothal, and it’s like no other betrothal in the world. She must undertake two tests to prove herself worthy of the royal family and pledge herself to a merman who’s a rumored party boy; changed since she saw him three years ago. Now, on top of the already daunting stress, Serafina has had continuous nightmares about a dark creature hiding in the Southern Sea. Her mother brushes it off as nerves, but when the palace is attacked and Serafina captured, she is forced to question the source and meaning of her dreams.
Together with her best friend, Neela, Serafina must find the Iele, powerful river “witches” in the River Olt. Only then will they discover why they have been called by such horrifying nightmares and what they must do to save the oceans.
Deep Blue is the start of Jennifer Donnelly’s series, the WaterFire Saga, following six mermaids as they struggle to save the world. The story prologue opens with a growing darkness festering in the Southern Sea before focusing on Serafina di Merrovingia, Principessa of Miromara. While some aspects of the story appear dark (such as the prologue), Donnelly has purposefully created her story this way to show the opposing difference of light versus dark and good versus evil. Deep Blue is very fast-paced, and the story flows smoothly. Donnelly doesn’t leave room for slow or dull passages. It’s a book that you don’t want to put down until you’ve finished it; and even then, you’re already pining for the next one.
Donnelly’s imagination and creativity have produced a world like no other. Her descriptions of the landscape and characters are thorough and easy to imagine. Humanity has yet to discover everything in the ocean. Donnelly has imagined the missing pieces and put them together to reveal a stunning and hidden world we could never dream of finding.
If you enjoyed the first book and are dying to know what happens next like I was, the remaining books in the series are Rogue Wave, Dark Tide, and Sea Spell.
