Furry Friends: Meet Colt!

Welcome to the dog days of summer which for me is more literal than figurative this season. Meet the newest addition to my crazy household, Colt!

He is a miniature dachshund that thinks he's some big ole' bad dog, when in reality he is the size of a hot dog bun. He is full of energy and keeps me on my toes, because let's face it puppies are a constant trip hazard. When they tell you that puppies require a lot of work they weren't lying. I haven't had a dog since I was a teenager which was...well let's just say a long time ago. In the meantime, I have just had Luna and she is as low maintenance as it gets. All she wants is her daily Meow Mix and lobster mac and cheese flavored treats and she is purrfectly satisfied with her feline life. She is slowly, but surely adjusting to her new companion in the house. Some days, she has to lay down the law and let Colt know that she is the queen of the Edwards household.

For me, the hardest part of adjusting to a new puppy has been housebreaking him. I value my sleep greatly and prefer 9-11 hours of sleep, especially on days when I don't have to be at work till 10. Unfortunately, this is not part of my life anymore, now, I'm up walking a dog at 7:00AM trying to get him to use the bathroom outside and failing at getting him to go back to sleep once he's back inside. Once he's up, he's ready to play, even if that means me and the cat can't sleep.

While, having a new canine companion can be difficult and downright frustrating at times I wouldn't give it up for the world. This little ball of joy looks like a cinnamon roll when he's sleeping and has beds all throughout the house, when the need to snooze hits. Currently, his favorite toy is his dragon plush, because he can make the wings make crunchy noises which he can't seem to get enough of. He loves to fetch and sometimes will bring it back and sometimes he doesn't....it's a work in progress. His favorite treat is his little bacon treats, because they are soft and easy for him to devour. He's had whipped cream one time at an ice cream shop and he acted like it was the best thing since sliced bread. He loovvveess people especially kids and like my extroverted husband, he doesn't meet a stranger.
