Hi, I'm Ash and I am a very anxious bird.
Like so many who have an anxiety disorder, there are certain things that I turn to when I am feeling panicked. It could be a video game, a book, or (for the sake of this post) a television show.
Re-watching television shows has been a fierce habit of mine for decades, but it was only after I got my diagnosis that I understood this is common for anxiety sufferers. For me, it is the fear of the unknown that can trigger stress. However, shows that I have seen a dozen times (or, heh, more) offer a stillness when my brain-noise is at its loudest.
So what shows do I turn to when I want to curl up in my bed with my Kylo Ren plushie?
Bob's Burgers
This show follows the Belcher family as they navigate life in their restaurant. It is fun and heartwarming, featuring an array of lovable characters. Oh, and it is my absolute favorite show in the entire world.
The Great British Baking Show
What's better than a giant tent filled with home bakers making sponge and macrons between sipping tea? Well, not much in my opinion which is why I am constantly delving back into episodes of this endearing competition.
Hey Arnold!
This cartoon encompassed my childhood in the 90's, so imagine my joy when I found the entire season on Hulu last year. Did I do several re-watches? Yes. Am I a nostalgic millennial clinging to the past? Debatable.
Mystery Science Theater 3000
I have vague memories of the original show but definitely hopped on board with the Netflix remake. There is something truly magical about B movies... like a train wreck you can't look away from.
Skin Wars
This competition features one of my favorite things... interesting art. I have easily watched all three seasons several times now, and I am still blown away by how these artists are able to create masterpieces on human skin.
So, those are a few of the shows I throw on in the background on rough days. Do you have specific titles that you seek out? If not, feel free to try any of the suggestions above. My comfort show could be your new comfort show.
Happy Watching!
