Being healthy is associated with taking care of the physical aspects of our bodies, inside and out. An aspect that is often overlooked is millions of thin strands that grow out of follicles on our scalps, commonly referred to as "hair". Healthy hair is an element of health and wellness, and nurturing and protecting patterns, textures, and hair types should always be part of health and wellness conversations.
My healthy hair journey began in 2011. I knew my hair had the potential to flourish, however, I was not seeing those results. I decided to re-evaluate how I was treating my hair - from the products that I was using, the amount of time and effort I put into taking care of it, and the way I was styling it. I began practicing protective styles - Bantu Knots, 2-Strand Twist, the Pineapple Updo - I tried them all! After many trial-and-error moments, and a few twists and tangles, I eventually decided to stick with a method that seemed to be more of my liking in terms of style and ease of technique, and it was actually a method that I had been taught as a young girl. That method is best known as braiding! Since utilizing braiding to protect and style my hair, I have experienced a positive hair transformation, and gained confidence in the ability to manage my hair and ensure that it is truly healthy. However, as smooth as that journey sounds, I understand how managing and maintaining healthy hair can be a challenge.
Just like maintaining other aspects of health and wellness - whether that be through exercise, making healthier food choices, meditation, or daily affirmations - healthy hair does require putting forth an effort in order to receive your desired goal. The journey can be frizzy and frustrating but, it can also be experimental, exciting, and empowering! Healthy hair is about discovering the many ways to protect your hair, promote better hair care practices, and find what works best for you. It is also important to remember that healthy hair is just one strand of health and wellness as a whole!
