We all have them-those favorite fictional relationships either romantic or platonic friendships in our particular fandoms we are involved in. Here is a rundown of my favorite ships that I will argue over and y’know sink with.
Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute from The Office
I’m not really sure how I went through life before I discovered The Office and the brilliant lunacy that is the friendship of Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute. These two are the perfect mix to create hilarity and heart. Nothing beets their loyalty to one another.
Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
I’m not crying, you’re crying. This is one of the greatest contemporary tragic love stories. Hazel Grace and Augustus were the originators of the sick kids in love story that has become so popular today. They were witty and snarky and slightly jaded about everything, which I still love. Okay? Okay.
Veronica Mars and Logan Echolls from Veronica Mars
Let LoVe Live. If you haven’t watched Veronica Mars stop what you are doing and go do it now then come back. Everyone has seen or read about the girl falling for the dark and troubled guy but what the show creator did with Veronica and Logan was create two characters who were both sardonic, strong, and accepting of the other’s faults.
Mary Stuart Queen of Scotts and King Francis II of France from French History
I am fascinated by European History and the history of monarchies. I first discovered the relationship of Mary and Francis II when I was visiting a museum in Dresden then again with the show Reign. The two were betrothed and grew up in french court together. While they were only married for a short time of two years before King Francis II died, Francis was devoted to Mary. Who doesn’t love reading about a king so fully devoted to his queen that he lets her rule beside him?
Rory Gilmore and Logan Huntzberger from Gilmore Girls
Yes, I did hear you just say “What?!? No, it is Rory and Jess!” I know this is an unpopular opinion but I’ve always been a die hard Rory and Logan fan. I love Jess, he is great and maybe even the smarter choice. But love can be unpredictable and turn your world upside down-that is what Logan did for Rory. Logan cracked Rory’s world open and taught her that everyone is fallible and the importance of forgiveness not just to others but to yourself and that is why he will always be my favorite.
Benedick and Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
OMG. I love them. I didn’t read Shakespeare in depth until college but I was immediately obsessed with these two. Beatrice was a strong female who was waiting to meet a man who could equal her in intellect and respect. Their banter back and forth throughout the play is fantastic and they are equally clever with their comments to one another. At the heart of Beatrice and Benedick is a relationship of rekindling something that was lost and finding your way back to it.
Sam Havesford and Ryan Foxheart from the Tales from Verania series by T.J. Klune
Sam and Ryan are my favorite fantasy romantic pairing and their love is epic, disastrous, and hilarious. They are teens when they meet and adversaries but life events bring them together even though they are both promised to others. Despite the insurmountable odds, Lady Tina DeSilva, Todd with the cute ears, a melodramatic unicorn named Gary, and an inappropriately evil fairy king named Dimitri the couple make it through together.
Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester from Supernatural
I have grown up over the past 15 years with the Winchester brothers. When monster hunting is the family business things can get weird and dark but somehow these two always and I mean ALWAYS find a silver lining. They fight for each other even if it means their doom and I love how strong their familial bond is. I know some people roll their eyes at Sam and Dean or Supernatural but if you have brothers of your own, like I do, they remind you that even though they can be annoying and stupid, you love them fiercely.
