The Keeper of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger is one of my favorite series. When I heard there was a new book coming out, I instantly preordered it and devoted myself to rereading all eleven books. Then I read it in two days because it was so good. So without further ado, here's a book review of Unraveled!
Unraveled was the first book I bought with my own money, and I'm so glad I did! When the Barnes & Noble Edition arrived on my porch, I was immediately in awe of the hardcover engraving and map inside.
If you take the jacket off, the cover says "Adventures in Humanland (AKA: the Slow Unraveling of a Boy With Awesome Hair)" in Keefe's handwriting, recreating the journal that he wrote. The map inside the cover has pictures of landmarks, food, and animals, and Keefe has notes all over. My favorite note is "Foster was born somewhere around here (and Diznee has his own LAND!)"
Also, there's a bonus chapter in Keefe's point of view of Chapter 42 in Stellarlune. Yes, that chapter.
I'm not gonna spoil anything for you, but I was surprised by all the plot twists, from ____ staying with Keefe to ____ helping him. Also, it was cool to read everything from Keefe's point of view, especially the parts when he reveals how much he likes Sophie. I loved the references to pop culture that Messenger weaved in. For example,"[Keefe] even treated himself to a Batman hoodie and a T-shirt that said IT'S ME. HI. I'M THE PROBLEM, IT'S ME. - which felt very fitting [to him]." (Messenger 145) Another thing that made Unraveled an interesting read was Keefe's humor. When I read that Keefe thought that "ninety percent of the time, research was a phenomenal waste of effort," (Messenger 160) I laughed out loud.
There are a lot of people at our library waiting, so you should get on the wait list soon if you want to read Unraveled!
