It is more than fair to say that at this point in my life, I have dealt with a few obsessions, but nothing I have ever adored has had quite the lifelong impact as my movie obsession. I have been obsessed with movies of all kinds since before I could talk. There is something about the mixture of a great story choreographed on screen and a banging soundtrack that leaves me feeling intoxicated. I just can't get enough!
That being said, this has created quite the issue in my house, it turns out you can run out of room on your walls, who would've guessed?
Below is the anchor of my collection. These are the movies that I am unwilling to put into storage, and yes I have more than 200 movies in storage, but not these. They are the movies I go back to over and over again, without fail.
The core collection runs the gambit from Accepted to V for Vendetta and everything in between. I have a personal penchant for Comedies and Horror so they make up most of the collection, but you will be hard pressed not to find an array of Foreign and Domestic classics, as well as the often unheard of and unsung heroes of the film world.
These shelves also hold the TV series, Concerts, and Comedy specials that I will watch over and over again, almost as a form of security blanket.
Below are two of the "special" DVD shelves in my house. One shelf is wholly devoted to movies with Criterion Collection releases., while the other holds all of the Arrow releases.
When it comes to acquiring a film with the absolute best transfer of image and sound, as well as an insane amount of Bonus Features, then you have to go for Arrow and Criterion releases. My goal is to eventually have every Guillermo del Toro and Wes Anderson film on Criterion Blu Ray.
Here we have newer movies that are either Non Region, which means they have to be viewed on a special All Region player, or they have yet to be watched and moved into the large anchor collection. They have a place of distinction behind my Tiny Tans before I move them to the the regular collection.
And finally we have the DVD shelf that is devoted wholly to Horror. Oh yes, here we have the good, the bad, and the absolutely awful.
I don't know when I really clicked with the Horror genre, but I have to assume it was after I saw Scream for the first time back in 1996 and fell completely in love. After that I really started to take into consideration some of these stories.
From the original Candyman and his undying and obsessive love, to Ari Aster's recent masterpiece Midsommar, I cannot seem to find a genre that speaks to me more. All hail the role of the Final Girl and how seeing survival on screen made being a teenager and growing up just a little easier.
I hope to one day this year have everything properly sectioned out and in alphabetical order, but with the manner in which I buy and devour movies, I worry I will never get fully caught up.
For now I will continue to warm myself in the rays of the TV screen, and enjoy watching a world of fantasies that color my own reality. And if you ever need a movie recommendation, I'm here!<3
