The Greatest Photo Ever Taken

The term ‘greatest photo’ may be subjective depending on the person who it is addressed to, it could mean a photo of significant historical importance that someone values or it could be a picture showing a person’s loved ones which could be considered their greatest photo. But what I think is the greatest photo ever taken isn’t even taken on Earth. The greatest photo ever taken is the Pale Blue Dot which was taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft. Voyager 1 was initially launched by NASA in 1977 to expand upon stellar exploration because it is a simple probe that can take pictures and transmit information back to NASA; it was on the outer reaches of our solar system when it transmitted the Pale Blue Dot back to Earth in 1990.

The reason why this is the greatest photo ever taken is because it has everything. Every single idea, thought, government, war, human and animal that ever existed was there on that dot. This photo has the greatest symbolic meaning because it touches everything. Did you know that if you were to crunch the Earth’s 4.6 billion years of existence into a 24 hour day, humanity wouldn’t even be able to take up 0.2 seconds of that history. Every single human action in those 0.2 seconds happened on that Pale Blue Dot, every single religion, kingdom and every book written was made on that dot. It truly shows anyone that we are small, fighting over a speck of dust when the universe is so large. In the great expanse of the universe, we are less than a speck of dust and that is the reality. But don’t let that get you too down, the world is still very big and life is all the more important because of it.
