The Key to all Relationships: What Makes a Successful Relationship?

Love has been a continuous force that brings people together for centuries. It is what allows people to sit together and feast every evening, deal with hardships, and comply with distant relatives. For love to exist, there must be conflict or a force to highlight this strong emotion, without hate there cannot be love. Tough love, clinginess, love from a distance, and friendship are what humans are biologically destined to do. In friendships and relationships, there are several ways to grow into a successful, plentiful partnership. The most important components to a relationship are clear communication, understanding and patience, and supporting one another in all situations.

Humans would be an extinct species in today’s age if communication did not exist. If world leaders did not know the plans of other countries, also known as miscommunication, war would decimate the lives of many, eventually leading to the extinction of mankind. This concept can be applied to all types of relationships: without communication, relationships fall apart. Miscommunication is the simplest reason to begin an argument. For example, on Valentine’s Day people may have different expectations for the holiday. Some may want a grand gesture, while others would prefer to not celebrate the holiday at all. Communicating plans and expectations to a partner, friend, or family member eliminates assumptions and eventual resentment towards loved ones. Another situation where communication may become an issue is one’s expectations of a relationship. In high school, people’s reasons in finding a relationship can either be to find comfort in someone, have fun, or even just to have a date for prom. In the beginning of a relationship, people must communicate their expectations. This would eliminate eventual heartbreak if that person was not looking for a long term relationship. Communication is a tool that is meant to be used to avoid misunderstandings, assumptions, and unneeded arguments.

When an argument arises, it is almost always one person wishing to be heard and understood. Having patience during an argument allows for each person to truly listen to each other. Patience creates time for thinking and building a solution to solve the conflict. For example, an argument can begin because the girlfriend has felt distant from her boyfriend. Starting the argument takes thought and reasoning, so when the girlfriend brings her argument to her boyfriend, the boyfriend must exhibit patience and understanding to listen to her argument. Through understanding his girlfriend’s perspective, he can create a solution like going on more dates or spending more time together. Patience and understanding avoids accumulating negative emotions like anger and hatred, therefore, allowing one to think properly. When a person has not felt understood and heard by another person, the relationship begins to feel like a chore that always has to be kept. This begins to build the feeling of resentment which leads to the end of the relationship. If proper communication did not occur, conflict arises; in order to come to a resolution, patience and understanding must be implemented to form a successful relationship.

Support from a companion is an evolutionary need for humans. In the beginning of mankind, people worked together to feed each other, take care of children, and fend off predators. This concept has adapted over time to the reason people are less happy when without a partner. Though independence is an important characteristic of successful people, they need support from one another, a person to be there with them every step of the way. For example, in abnormal family dynamics like having one parent in the household, that one parent needs a large amount of support to get through the day. Having a career, children, and several other things that depend on one person, eventually leads to burnout. By having support, people are able to get through each day. If one person is not able to make dinner one night, the next person should pick it up and complete the task. This kind of support is paramount to the success of relationships of all kinds.

Without communication, understanding and patience, and support, love would become an unattainable emotion. The abstract concept of love gives reason to why people do things. In all relationships, communication can be used to build connections, avoid misunderstandings and assumptions. Patience and understanding allows for every person to be heard. This eventually leads to the need for support, the way to show friends, partners, and family that they can do anything. Without these important concepts, the higher-level connection humans have, would cease to exist.
