Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually between September 15 and October 15 to honor and celebrate the Hispanic and Latin American contributions and cultural influence on our nation and society. Here are some ways you can get involved and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

Read a Book by an Author or About a Character who is Hispanic or Latin American

There are so many great titles by Hispanic or Latin American authors, or titles that feature characters who are Hispanic or Latin American. Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan is a historical fiction title inspired by the immigration and assimilation into American Culture experience of Ryan's Mexican grandmother. Through the journey of the main character, Esperanza Ortega, readers are exposed to Spanish culture, values, and the hardships experienced while contributing to the United States. There are many other wonderful titles that engulfs readers in Hispanic or Latin American heritage - browse the catalogue here!

Research Cultures and Customs

The perfect way to learn about anything is through research. There are plenty of resources for research including CultureGrams. CultureGrams offers reliable, updated, and expert reviewed information and reports on all 50 States in the U.S.A., the 13 provinces of Canada, and reports on over 200 countries. Information and reports can be filtered through a Kids Edition, States and Provinces Edition, or World Edition search feature. The World Edition includes the 21 countries that are highlighted during Hispanic Heritage Month. Each report on the country covers information ranging from to holidays and family lifestyle.

Try New Food

There is no better way to get a true taste of culture than through food! The Hispanic and Latin American cuisine, in my opinion, is like no other. The spices, the heat, the flavor, the fresh ingredients - the food is a treasure to taste buds. A common Peruvian delight and one of my favorite dishes is Lomo Saltada - a stir fired beef with French Fries (insert chef's kiss).

Attend a Hispanic Heritage Month Event

During Hispanic Heritage Month, you can always find cultural activities and celebrations. Check out the event calendars for museums, art councils, nonprofit organizations, or your local library to see what events are happening near you!
